Domaine Cardinaud: where the art of river transport supports the art of painting.

Spotlight on the Domaine Cardinaud

As the 38th edition of the Magné International Painting Festival approaches – due to take place from 17 to 19 July – the festival is paying tribute to the partners who bring our region to life. This year, the spotlight is on the Cardinaud Estate, based in La Repentie, a long-standing supporter of the festival and an iconic family-run business in ‘Green Venice’.

Founded in 1979 by Manuel Mercier’s grandparents, what was originally just a simple jetty on a farm has become a veritable institution in the Marais Poitevin. Magali, managing director of the company where she has worked for almost thirty years, now shares the running of the business with Manuel and their two daughters. With the arrival of this younger generation, the company proudly celebrates its fourth generation of enthusiasts, establishing itself as one of the very last families of boatmen in the area.

Over the decades, the Cardinaud jetty has become the Domaine Cardinaud, a major tourist and economic player in the Marais Poitevin, whilst retaining its authenticity. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the quiet rhythm of the paddle or the «pigouille», taking leisurely trips that reveal the mysteries of the canals from dawn to dusk. Today, the range of activities on offer has diversified wonderfully, including guided and self-guided tours, dining, family treasure hunts and all-inclusive holidays. “With this diversification, our priority is to ensure the company’s long-term viability, to protect our staff and to showcase our magnificent region,” explains Magali.

This deep attachment to local roots explains the loyalty of Domaine Cardinaud, which has been a partner of the festival for some twenty years. «We have been part of the evolution of this magnificent event and have known three chairmen, starting with Claude Audis, one of the founders,» recalls Manuel Mercier.

For the management, this sponsorship is a matter of course. The festival is a cultural, tourist and economic driving force that, every year, transforms Magné and Coulon into a vast open-air workshop, showcasing the unique landscapes of the Marais Poitevin for a weekend in mid-July.

The Magné International Festival is proud to count such a dedicated family amongst its loyal supporters. Come along to the Embarcadère Cardinaud throughout the year to discover the magic of the marshes, and from 17 to 19 July to celebrate creativity and sharing.
